Slava Stepanov was born and raised on the Far Eastern Russian island of Sakhalin. From an early age he spent many summers on the mainland with his grandparents in their Dacha (summer home) where they grew all their fruit, vegetables and herbs for cooking, eating and preserving. At the age of 18, Slava set off on his first voyage as a merchant marine officer and spent the next 5 years sailing the seven seas!  Part of his time sailing was spent as crew on board Greenpeace ships where he had many adventures including meeting his British wife.

With a young daughter to look after, Slava gave up his sailing career in 2003 and settled in the UK where he reluctantly began working in an office. He soon realised his creative side wasn't quite being met and with his childhood passion of working with the soil being rekindled in his own garden, he enrolled at Reaseheath Horticultural College where he studied for 2 years and gained a BTEC Higher Diploma in Garden Design.

During his time at the Reasheath he was privileged to be part of a Gold Medal award winning team who built and designed a garden at the RHS Tatton Flower show.

Slava now runs Garden Aspects a  successful garden design and maintenance business in Cheshire. He loves sharing his knowledge with anyone showing a vague interest and is delighted to be joining the team at BDC. When not out working in gardens Slava can be found walking with his wife, two children and their lovely dog and occasionally foraging for delicious wild treats.
