Fiona Brunt Cancer Beauty Expert
Meet Fiona Brunt Cancer Beauty Expert
Hi ladies! I thought I would start off my monthly beauty blogs with a bit of an introduction on who I am, what I do, and how I met the wonderful Jennifer Young and got involved with Defiant Beauty. My name is Fiona and I am a freelance make-up artist in the Shropshire/Staffordshire area.
A little about me: I studied bridal, photographic and fashion make-up at the Academy of Freelance Make-up Artists in London, where I also learnt hairstyling and nail enhancements. When I returned to this area I started working as a volunteer beauty therapist/make-up artist at the Fresh Hair wig and beauty salon at University Hospital North Staffs.
I have been surrounded by medicine since I was born, two of my grandparents and both my parents are doctors, so you would think it was in the blood. However I diverted off into the world of fashion and make-up. I did not think I would be linked so closely with medicine and cancer in my job but it is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable parts of what I do. There is nothing quite like making a woman who is going through such a hard time in life feel beautiful and confident again. A lady came into the salon from the breast cancer unit last week, she was understandably very upset. Her biggest concern was that her hair was going to fall out and she would need a wig and that everyone would know that it was a wig. She was also concerned that her eyelashes would fall out and she loved her mascara. After having a chat with her and her husband and showing her around the salon, we dispelled some of her biggest fears. She didn’t want to leave the salon and said she felt so much better and less apprehensive now she had been there. They both left with big smiles on their faces and that feeling you cannot put a price on!
Fiona Ford, a lady who had been through treatment for cancer at the hospital, started the salon 2 years ago. It was her dream that women would have a place to support them through this difficult time and make the experience of choosing a wig less scary and more like going to get your hair done at a salon. Initially the salon helped cancer patients for 3 days a week. We are now expanding to develop an entire salon experience for ladies.
I work 2 days a week in the Fresh Hair wig and beauty salon at the Cancer Centre in the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. I have been working there for just over a year now and have seen it develop so much in that time. We now have planning permission to build a purpose built salon in the hospital so we can become the patient’s very own hair and beauty salon.
The new location will also mean more space for stocking Jennifer’s wonderful products and treatments instead of being in a temporary space on the chemotherapy ward. In the salon we will be able to look after hair at all stages from when ladies have been diagnosed, supporting them through their hair loss and wig selection to their own hair growing back. There will be a quiet space for supporting ladies.
Our volunteers who have been through treatment and value the work we do. They come back to share their experiences, advice and tips. We also have a treatment room for holistic therapies to relax you and send you straight to sleep.
I have been able to plan my area, for all things nails, beauty, make-up and skincare where ladies can come and be pampered and leave feeling relaxed and glamorous. Our ladies tell us that they look far more glamorous during treatment than they ever did before.
We have ranges of hats, scarves, nail varnishes, hair/wig care products and of course our Jennifer Young Defiant Beauty range.
It is in this salon that I met the amazing Jennifer Young and her incredible Defiant Beauty range. This range is specifically designed for patients going through chemotherapy and helps to combat some of the side effects that they can experience, such as dry, sore, itchy and sensitive skin.
Jennifer worked with nurses and patients to make sure there is nothing in these products that is not suitable for use during treatment, not even water!! We use these only these beautiful products on clients in our salon, even those friends, family who are supporting their loved ones as the products are great for anybody with sensitive skin. The salon manager swears by the beauty serum.
I work closely with Jennifer and the defiant beauty products in the salon. I am now a skincare consultant for her bespoke range as I am a complete convert to her products. The more you speak to this incredible woman the more you realise just how important it is that you know what you are putting on your skin.
I do bridal and special occasion make-up and get great satisfaction out of making women feel beautiful. This also applies in the salon as hair loss and growth can affect facial hair too and their skin goes through changes.
I am there with my make-up kit to teach ladies how to get that healthy glow back and define their features. We have wonderful eyebrow kits in the salon which are popular with both patients and staff for defining their eyebrows and creating the perfect shape for them.
When we have the new salon we will also be offering make-overs and a photoshoot for the ladies, which is an incredible day for us and for them.
Many tips and tricks from nails to make-up will be shared in my monthly blogs. I hope you enjoy reading them.
