Catching melanoma before it strikes
Catching melanoma before it strikes: Online self-screening and change detection for moles
- Accurate image processing technology for detecting changes to moles
- Encourages people to monitor themselves for changes in moles
- Records can be shared with medical professionals to aid assessment
Skin Analytics is a new online self-screening service that detects changes in moles that might lead to the development of a melanoma. Skin cancer accounts for 1 in every 3 cancers diagnosed globally, with incident rates doubling every decade. Early detection is critical in treating melanoma and experts agree this is not happening early enough. The online service developed by Skin Analytics enables early home detection of small changes in moles that could be warning signs of cancer.
Based on advanced patent-pending technology, the image processing software can detect subtle changes in moles, and account for different lighting, focal lengths and camera angles. Users photograph their moles every 1 to 3 months using a smartphone and upload the images to the website. The software then compares the different photos looking for any changes and stores the data securely in the cloud. This information can be shared with a dermatologist or GP to help a diagnosis.
Neil Daly, Founder of Skin Analytics says, “People are advised to monitor themselves for changes in the shape, size and colour of their moles. But it’s hard to keep track of what a mole previously looked like. Research suggests people are also leaving it too long before visiting a doctor. We want people to know about changing moles earlier so that they can take the appropriate action.”
He continues, “Skin Analytics and its medical advisors are committed to using our technology to assist existing self-monitoring to help get the right people to their doctor for further investigation.”
Detecting skin cancer early is critical; if a melanoma grows more than just 1mm deep the survival rate drops by 30%. Spotting one early can be life-saving.
